No Smoke – NO PEAT – Cask Strength – Natural Colour – SINGLE GRAIN
What a way to start off our 2024 bottlings… A beautiful, delicate and complex whisky with decades of maturation under it’s belt.
Strathclyde distillery sits on the south side of the River Clyde in central Glasgow. The distillery, which is 97 years old this year, does not release an original distillery bottling, rather the majority of this delicious spirit is used for blending. Interestingly, the distillery, much dependent on steam technology for production, sits directly opposite of Glasgow Green where inventor James Watt had his moment of inspiration and invention on the development of the steam engine.
“I had entered the Green [of Glasgow] by the gate at the foot of Charlotte Street—had passed the old washing-house.
I was thinking upon the engine at the time, and had gone as far as the herd’s house, when the idea came into my mind”
World changing history aside, this cask has given the angels more than their fair share for over 30 years of maturation. The resulting liquid has a modest natural cask strength of 51.5% and an equally modest yield of only 148 bottles. However, there is a silver lining… the high loss means that over the years there has been lots of space for oxygen to move in and out of the cask. This has help shape the maturation and develop a whisky which is soft, fruity, approachable and smooth- without being boring. It is a delight to experience.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
The River Clyde runs through the heart of the City of Glasgow. Given the distillery’s location on the banks of the river, how could they call it anything but Strathclyde? Pair that with our great love of classic song The River by The Boss, Bruce Sprinsteen, and you’ve got the name.
